I was told from the guy that sold me my 2003 50 hp 2 stroke to run just 93 octane but someone just now told me to run only low octane. Which one is correct? Also I just drained the gear oil and only got about 8-10 oz. of fluid. Is that low? I know I need to pump it back in until it runs out the top but how much and what weight should I purchase?

"Don't run the 93 Octane. It is called for in some of Merc's very high horse motors but not yours.

The high octane is achieved through a number of additives that are not very friendly to most outboards.

The only time I would ever put it in a tank is following winter storage. Properly stablized gas will lose some of it's octane rating during extended storage. So for most of us, adding about 10% by volume of 93 Octane in the spring and mixing it up well, kinda revitalizes that old gas you have had sitting all winter - because low octane is almost as bad as high octane in an outboard.

Best practice is to use "fresh gas" (less than 3 or 4 days old) each outing."
