"Have a idle problem on my 92 Evinrude 115 hp.
The engine runs great over 2000 rpm,but when I put it to neatreul it idles just fore a short time and then dies.
Any suggestions that may be the problem, and things i could check?"

"Carb cleaning, Idle ciruits c

"Carb cleaning, Idle ciruits could be clogged, when running above idle force the choke it may clear the cicuit. Also you could have a spark issue. You need to do some testing."

"I tested the spark, was just fine,so I guess I am starting with carb cleaning.
I have just bought the engine, and I can see that there is no filter on the fuel-line,usually there are one mounted just before the vro-pump.
Hope carb-cleaning would help.

Could bad needle valve/seat that doesnt close properly, make this problem?"

"Well we dont know yet if it&#

"Well we dont know yet if it's lean or rich.

If the float was too high or was stuck a little open, or if the needle tip was damaged (good magnifying glass) that would cause a rich condition, what do the plugs look like just after, are they wet? any water droplets on them? any Metal that shouldn't be there ??

I use a spray bottle with some straight gas, removing the carb air box, and get the engine close to idle, can do this on a hose, but in the water it's best. Then spray 1 or 2 squirts (sorry spray no stream) into 1 carb at a time and see what happens, if the engine smooths out and doesn't die or bog down, that carb is lean. If it bogs down a "little" with 1 to 1/2 squirt it's just right, if it bogs the engine down it's rich.

Carb cleaning always helps, if there's a problem with the carb, I like doing the above check to check, could be 1 carb could be all 3, (usually the bottom one for some pain in the a*@ reason.)

good luck."

Good idea!
Will try this and see what happendes.
I also will take a compression test just to be sure I`m not low on a sylinder.

"Have taken a compression test

"Have taken a compression test today, nothing wrong there,120psi on all four.
Did also a spark test, good spark on all four.
Have done some adjusting on idle screw,so engine now idles, but rough. The spark plugs are smutty.I suspect cleaning/rebuilding the carburators will be the difference,or maybe adjust the timing/linkage. Or???"

"I'd start with the carb c

"I'd start with the carb cleaning, then run again, and adjust the idle mixture, can you do it in a tub? or garbage barrel ?

How did you do the spark test? did you pull each wire to see if the engine changes? or not?

If good spark then i'd say the carbs are letting to much fuel in, but there could be another reason..

When you pump the fuel bulb does it get firm and stay firm?? or after a min or 1 its soft without running the engine ? could be Fuel pump leaking into the engine. -- just a thought.."

"Hi BB.
The engine are on the boat at sea.
Used a special tool in the spark test, there I put a wire in each sparkplugwire end ,then cranked the engine, clear good spark on all four.

Today I will take the boat fore a ride with a friend driving the boat, test the timing with a timing light lamp, and check the timing on idle and with full trottle, just too be sure that linkage are ok.
Will also check the fuel bulb without running the engine.
If the bulb gets soft,I guess I have to look at needle and seat.Right?
In that case,do you recommend a carb rep kit. Then I can replace major parts, and clean it well, like the idle air bleed orifice f.example?"

The primer bulb will go soft a

The primer bulb will go soft as the fuel pump sucks fuel Once set the timing rarely goes out unless someone plays with it. If the engine is running ok and there is no fuel leaking out the carbs i would give the motor a does of seafoam and a good run.

"Problem killed!
After some hard days,I finally found the problem,
I hope.
I had water in my tank, cleaned the carbs, mounted a water seperator, new fuel filter, the engine has gone smoohtly fore 2 days now, hope it lasts.
Thanks fore all help and good words."

"Not fore a long time in heaven.
The problem is back.I Have to adjust the idle screw to make it idle at all,and it spits a lot of smoke every to seconds or so.
Seems like one of the sparks do not fire every time it should. When throttle slowly upwards it misfires like this up to about 2500 rpm and then suddenly runs like normal. When I now returns to neutral after running some time,it idles fine just for short time(10 to 20 sec.),then the misfiring/trouble starts again, and sometimes it dies nearly at once. Dissasembled the carbs again, but they were 100% clean.
Did also try with a portable tank and another fuel line,no difference.
Info:I mix the fuel myself (50:1), the Vro-oilinlet is plugged and electric part is disconnected. Can this influence on the problem.
Could this be a electric problem?
A bad coil, sparkplugwire or something else?
I am close to give up,need help."

"Where in Norway are you located?
If not mistaken the Clipper 17 is rather low on the transom and quite deep in the water. Are the exhaust relief holes above water?
If you have an outboard dealer in vicinity, buy a can of 'Engine Tuner' and the hose to connect it to the primer solenoid.
Follow the instruction to the point. You may try to get at least half the can into the engine before stopping it.
If possible post a pic of the spark plugs , or up-load it somewhere and post a link."

"Hi Morten.
Located on Radoy,a hour north by Bergen.
You are right about the Clipper 17,its rather low on the transom and quite deep in the water.
The exhaust relief holes are just above water, when boat not moving. If under what could happen?
I remember I had some problem with the seal on the exhaus tube when putting the lower unit back some months ago when I bought the engine, after checking the impeller and water pump.
Is it possible I have a leak and high water level in the tube, coursing some problem?
There are no exhaus coming out under water when idling normally, only with fast idling.
Then the can of 'Engine Tuner'.Do I connect a hose to the inlet on the primer valve and plug the hose comming from the fuel-line to the carbs?
I will get some pic of the spark plugs and try to post it."

"Not any good dealers up there

"Not any good dealers up there that I know about, however you may call Dranges Baatservice, Os (1 hr south of Bergen) if you can not get the parts locally.
If the exhaust relief holes gets under water, the back pressure gets too big and the engine simply stalls!!Sometimes it helps trimming it out to get the holes above water.
When you get the can and adapter, just connect it to the valve and start the engine. Keep it running by manually operate the carbs at a bit high idle, until the can is half empty, then leave the boat for some hours, or to next morning!
Or if you go 'fishing', about a six-pack of Hansa!
Then start the engine and get as quickly as possible to about 1/2 -3/4 throttle. When the engine smooths out, go full throttle for about 5-10 minutes."

"I will try that Morten, and if

"I will try that Morten, and if it helps,I guess a celebration with lot of six-packs will happen. But what about the tube issue in the lower unit,if I have a leak there and a possible high water level inside,is that a problem?
Shouldn´t there be some exhaus coming out below water while idling normally, not only when idling faster?"

Finally!
Found a leak in one of the carbs, bought two rep. sets, engine runs much better.
The six-packs has already been consumed.

Good to hear.
Did you ever give it a run with Engine Tuner?
I did it as standard procedure on every engine in for winter service/storage.

but I soon will.
Thanks fore all help and good words, now I am going to enjoy the rest off summer with no engine trouble I hope."

Marine Engine is on duty 24/7 all around the world!"

"And problem is back, bad idling again, sometimes engine stops.
What should I do,I am very close to give up.
Could a mailfunction thermostat cause such trouble.(fuel puddeling)?
Could the float in carb(s) be in wrong "height",
looked alright when installing the carb.rep.kit.

Desperat is a good description to what I am right now."

"Back again.
Thought I should give someone else a chance to drop by, but they seem to be gone!
This time we may start by a temp check.
Put your hands on top of engine, both sides, and it should be barely to touch. If smelling bacon -too hot. If cold, time for thermostats!
However the Engine Tuner suggestion is still on to get your engine cleaned out.
Check your primer solenoid and the red lever. If an end cap and valve in the red lever (ser ut som en sykkelventil), use the injection can. If not order a replacement kit and change to new type. Comes in hand when winterizing as same valve may be used."

I guess its not to hot, since no alarm goes, but I will check anyway."

"Hi,Morten.
Have no checked the temp issue ,seems okay, get warm but no problem with holding my hands on the top of engine.
Primer valve is the "correct type",so as soon I get a Engine Tuner,I will do the injection.

Another question: While studying the back of the engine,I notice that one of the coils has a different number then the three others.Could this course some of this problem."
