Hi folks
First post on this great forum.
I have an old 86 model 9.9hp Mariner that ive almost finished re building. Looking at the service manual regarding setting the timing the initial procedure states to REMOVE the cylinder head and secure the dial indicator over the centre of the top piston ?
This is well and good but at the end of the procedure it mentions nothing about replacing the cylinder head gasket. Am I reading this correctly that you have to take the cylinder head off to get true dead centre with the dial indicator because if so then I would assume a new head gasket would need to be fitted after the timing was set.
Most other units ive seen you can put the dial indicator straight in the spark plug hole but this is asking for the head to be removed so im a bit confused.
Any help appreciated.
