"I am having a problem with the engine stalling at idle. At a low speed idle, the enging surges instead of a smooth idle. The carburator has been rebuilt, with a new fuel filter. I have checked for intake leaks, and found none. The stalling issue makes it docking challenging. I do a lot of trolling for salmon, and when you have six to eight lines out it gets real hairy when the motor stalls. where should I start?"

"Ron...are you familar with the ESA on your engine, I'm wondering if it's being engaged at low speed? See pic below, the interupt switch is in the yellow circle. Next time your at the boat with the engine running at idle in neutral lift up on the lever on the switch and see if the rpm's drops even further or if there is no change?

"I take it the problem existed before the carb rebuild? Surging can be caused by a lean condition. Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture? If not, try richening it up a bit. If adjusting the mixture screws doesn't seem to have much effect, the idle curcuit could be clogged. Take the screws all the way out and blow air down through the ports."

The rythemic surging I am experincing existed prior to cleaning and rebuilding the carburator. I will remove the idle screws this weekend and try your recommendation. The boat has to be in the water and in gear before you can notice the poor idle condition.
