86 merc pullrope broke

Hello i have a problem and im not sure how to go about it i have a 86 20hp mercury and the pullrope just broke tonite, what do i need to fix it just the pullrope or the whole assembly any help would b greatly appreciated thanks

It's a dog unless you know the trick. First of all, DON'T try to take the thing apart--parts will fly out of there in all directions. Here's the trick:

Grind a small divot in the drum just deep enough to allow you to put the rope in the divot and rotate then drum about the housing. Then, using the new rope as a handle, wind her up the correct rotation, fighting the spring. When you think you have enough turns on the spring, add one more and go boating.

ok i think i got it but the old rope is stuck in there any idea how to get it out without screwing sumthin up

Take a long, thin rod and chisel it out of there.
