I have raw water cooled 8.1 with a good amount of steam coming out when throtting up. It is minimal when at idle speed. The temp was running about 200 then after awhile dropped to about 175 but the steam still persists. any ideas?

Woah! That's WAY too hot

Woah! That's WAY too hot for a raw water cooled motor. Around 150-160 degrees should be max at all times.

Do you have the wrong thermostats in there?

Jeff

not sure what temp the therms

not sure what temp the therms are at. now i wonder what i did to the head gaskets since it ran like that for a little over an hour.

Pull the plugs and examine the

Pull the plugs and examine them. Would be first indication of something wrong. Check the oil for possible water intrusion.

Checked oil, no white milky substance,
in a nutshell
no smoke, checked oil qt low so i added one qt. began to smoke, temps were high too. so now temps are low but still smoking. white smoke smeels sweet dissipates 10' off stern. so i changed the plugs and am waiting to get the oil remover so i can take the qt out that i put in. the dipstick reads just above the bottome dots that say add a qt. so the oil is right in range according to dipstick... the plugs were a little oily though, so i did change them. also at idle just exhaust comes out. at 1500 not notiable either. under load at 2000 rpm it billows out, at this point engine runs rough too like it is like it is trying to blow that oil out."

"The sweet smell is antifreeze

"The sweet smell is antifreeze. Are you using any coolant. Unless you have the wrong dipstick, the oil level vs. the smoke is coincidental. I would drain and refill the crankcase, then check the dipstick readings. Check your manual, but it should take 7 qts., including the filter. I would also do a compression test, better yet a leakdown test, if you have the capability.

I would much rather change a head gasket now, than a longblock in 10 hours."

didn;t check the coolant. yes

didn;t check the coolant. yes it is the oil dipstick. i added the same amount to the port engine as it was down the same amount and it is not smoking. i will be doing a comperssion test but the 64000 ? is what is the range I am looking for? I think i am leaning toward a head job. next time to boat is labor day. thanks for everyones input.

"Larry, I know you are checkin

"Larry, I know you are checking the oil dipstick, but is the dipstick correct? Is the handle and lettering on the handle the same color as the one for the other engine?

Compression should be 180-190. If you do remove the heads, be sure to replace the head bolts. They are torque-to-yield bolts and can not be reused."

"oh! I assume the dipstick is

"oh! I assume the dipstick is factory installed so I see no reason not to trust it. I had the oil changed in both engines and both read a qt low. I added the qt to both but only the starboard blows smoke. Why doesnt the port blow smoke as well then?
thanks for he info, but when it comes to that...I will find a mechanic to do the gasket."

"Larry,

Crusader has had i

"Larry,

Crusader has had instances of using the wrong dipstick. They have had to send out bulletins regarding this in the past. Their dipsticks are identified by the color of the handle and the color of the lettering on the handle. I'm simply asking if the markings on the dipstick are the same.

Regarding any further work, yes, if you are not confident to make these repairs, hire someone who is.

Good luck
Rick"

"Rick that is interesting. No

"Rick that is interesting. Not sure if it is the correct dipstick. Not anywhere near the boat so I would have to check to see the markings.
Seems like i did find a mechanic...too bad he is in NJ,
man Ihope it is just a matter of taking out 1 qt or oil. That would be great, but it just gets me that i added oil to both motors and only one is smoking. maybe the other has hte right dipstick. Sounds dumb but what are the markings I am looking for? the color of the handle is blue, but there is not any blue on the stick...matter of fact it looks as if it were rusted."

"Rick,
Read back thru posting

"Rick,
Read back thru postings ... the handle is yellow and writing is black. sorry bout the confusion

"Larry,

I can't see wha

"Larry,

I can't see what dipsticks you have but I just checked my Crusader bulletins and the only recent dipstick bulletin is for 5.7 engines only and is from '01. I don't think this is an issue with your engines, providing they are both the same."

"ok so here is the latest.

"ok so here is the latest.
Well it appears during PMS, the guy who installed the impeller, did so in reverse. Awesome I love paying for things twice.
Also, the intakes were clogged with barnacles and seashells. It seems the previous owner like to get a little to shallow and sucked up some shells then the boat sat for some time and the barnacles grew up in the intakes. So no big deal as far as repair goes. thanks god. thanks for all your help."
