1st post here but i've learned more reading old threads than i knew in 40ish years of boating. THaNK YOU to Joe, Graham, and all of the other regulars who spend an inordinate amt of time answering dumb Qs...like this one:

i have a decent running 1964 model 40 hp (model # is RD-26R) Johnson but lower unit has issues due previous owner abuse. i also have a 1971 40 hp (Model# 40E 71G) which is seized but appears to have good lower unit. both engines are electric start, manual shift and set up for remote operation. does anyone have a ny ideas on whether the '71 lower unit would be compatible with the '64 power head and what if anything would need to be done for them to coexist? lower units on the 2 motors look identical from the outside.

thanks!"
