6 hp water intake

Just picked up a 6 hp johnson and a little confused as to where the water
in-take is located. Below are a couple pics of where I think it is. It has a hole above the cavitation plate on one side but not the other.

Any help is appreciated as I have no idea where to put the ear muffs

What year six? I suggest running it in a barrel,and make sure to fill it past the water pump housing.
