"after installing new vortec roller 454's in place of my 92 454's question on timing...the delco marine dist have 20 deg of advance, factory initial of 10, 30 total, now with the new style combustian chamber heads that are supposly less prone to detonation and 30 deg is not much total timing, any body experimented with differnt timing on a simular set-up, thanks Rob"

Why? By advancing the timing further you are defeating the purpose of

"No, in other engine combinations we usually run min 36 deg total timing and as much as 42 deg. to produce the most power and ecomomy. differnt cam, head profiles have a effect on this, newer tech parts have made it possible to run more timing with detonation and thus producing more power and economy. if you see dyno runs on typical big block chevys they always run timing in this range. I know boats are always under a load and engine manufactures keep the timing on the low side to protect from detonation and sometimes this cannot be heard on some boats. but as I said newer head styles have made higher compression and more aggressive timing curves without detonation, this is some of the reasons you now see higher H/P ratings on smaller dist engines. was just wondering if anybody had experimented with this..thanks again Rob"
