"On the raw water pump (FWC cooled motors), could replacing the worn front plate/cap, make a vast differnce in temperature? Last year replaced starboard impellor and cam and didn't seem to make much diff in temp. Currently at idle speed the temp on the manifold is 150-160 and the riser/elbow about same but then on the exhaust hose coming off the elbow is a bout 190. Which seems too hot to me, but the dash temp guage is telling me around 150 at idle under load. These temps were taken at idle speed. When running the temps actually go down a little, which is typical impellor sign.

Few days ago rebuilt the port water pump and this time replaced the impellor, cam and also the worn front plate. Prior to this the temps taken with temp gun on manifold, riser/elbow and exhaust hose on this motor had been about 10-20 degrees cooler than starboard motor. Well now the temps are significanlty less manifold about 135, riser and elbow about 95-115 and on exhaust hose about 125. Dasj guage is telling me about 130-140 at idle under load.

I noticed it because jumped down in engine to check something after being out trolling for a few hours and noticed the port riser was cool enough to keep had on.

Only difference is the replacement of the plate/cover. I replaced this one as shop mentioned that when worn it lets suck in air. Could just the plate be causing this difference?

Any other places to look? Think am just going to replace other plate and see what happens but looking for other thoughts.

Engines are 1988 454s with 1100 hrs. Replaced risers and elbows year and a half ago.

Thanks
Ryan"

"Jeff,

Seemed to work well

"Jeff,

Seemed to work well on the one going to try the other and see if makes any difference.

What other possible causes could be for this and what are thoughts on the hotter temps I am getting?"

It is the 200 or so temp on the exhaust hose that is amking me concerned.
