So, I"m swamping 4.3L mercuriser's. new/used boat purchase had cracked block, other I had rebuilt. 2000 Glastron GS 185. Have engine out, outdrive off. and noticed these stainless steel plates and rubber peice of gasket in exhaust bellows. What are they used for? Where did they come from? engine had the bat wing style manifolds. replacement has the usual style. So not a big concern, just curious. Gimble bearing is rough, so replacing, along with all bellows. H2O pump. Anything else I should be concerned with? Shift cable? Boat had 394 hrs. fresh water boat. Should I replace riser gaskets in replacement engine. Best place to buy complete kit? Stay with factory or something else? I may have a clearance issue with 3" extensions on risers. It will be Very close. can they be removed? Then I would have to find different length exhaust elbows. these forums are awesome.

Dump the 1 piece bat wings, If your 0ld engine did not use extentions you can eliminate yours and use the 4 inch center rise manifolds and standard exaust dumps
Remove the spring assist on the shift cable, causes pre mature internal wear.
I have a set of the shorter dumps available message for the cost.
The SS parts in the exaust are the exaust shutters that were burned away from a serious overheat condition

Yes, I had already been informed to dump the bat wings. That engine is the one that cracked, or so I was told. I removed them to look in the exhaust. It did run, freeze plugs had rusted through. I also found one in the pit. Some people think removing the plugs is all that necessary.. Live and learn. So I can remove the 3" extensions if necessary? I measured it and it will be close. Any recommendation's for purchasing parts? Is the spring assist on the main cable mount on the engine? Thanks.

Parts recommendations- I get a lot of stuff here from marine engine. Link is in upper left. Also buy a lot of stuff from michigan motorz and nu wave marine

If the freeze plugs rusted through some one already replaced it with an automotive engine. Marine engines will have brass or stainless freeze plugs from GM. Very common to see a 4.3 out of a truck dropped in a boat. Cheap way to get back on the water.

If you have enough height between water line and elbow you can remove the 3” riser, just make sure there is enough space I don’t recall the spec maybe 13.5” or 15” ?
