I have a 1984 3.0 Liter A1 that will not start but will crank. I checked the voltage at the coil connections and I have 12 volts from the post to the block. I'm not getting any spark from the coil or plugs. I planning on changing the coil but I just wanted to see if I'm going in the rite direction to get this boat started.

"1984 can still have a point ignition system, better check that (20$) over just throwing a coil at it (120$)"

"Jeez, I hope the price of coils have not escalated to $120 since I ought my Pertronix Flame Thrower for $50 a couple of weeks ago

. Get one of these coils and a solid state ignition system. Do a search on this site for Pertronix and Hot Spark.

"I agree with Tom..... Go with a pertronix system and you will have a reliable electronic ignition.
When I bought my boat, it had a points system on it. I didn't even give that a chance. Before I started the boat for the first time, I installed the pertronix system. She fires up EVERY time!!!!"

"thats not the point, you told

"thats not the point, you told him "f no spark at coil then problem is at the coil.." and if there are points, a new coil wont help, doesnt mstter whast kind of coil you get, and yes i agree solid state is best, but you didnt answer his question, just trying to get all the facts out ther, and not just jump to conclusions, there is a flow of diagnostics, and if you jump a step, you may get lucky, and then you may spend a lot of money. thought hats whey we were here was to help, not assume."

"If you have points, remove the distributor cap, then crank the engine and see if the points are opening and closing.

Also, if you still have points, consider upgrading to electronic, it will save you a lot of headaches in the future. "

"Roscoelab, I wasn't saying for him to change out the coil I was mearly saying check the coil out first and like Tom said I don't know where you are buying your parts from but I bought the pertronix kit and coil for $110.00 US Dollars Total.. with the setup that he has now he needs to check all components of the ignition system to find the problem."

Thanks guys I got it started B

Thanks guys I got it started BUT This boat has been setting for 2 years full of gas with no maintance. I have drained the gas cleaned all the fliters even the one at the fual pump. It will run once it warms up OUT of the water. I had it yesterday and it will only run at 2000 rpms and barely make plane. Now my bigest problem now is the starter. when you try to start the starter relay clecks and that is all. I changed the slenoid but it did not help. My next sept is the starter it was real sloppy and I think it is hanging up and will not connect to the fly wheel. I can bang it with a hammer and it will start. But what is a boat a hole in the water to pore money in to.. but you got to love them.

"sounds like you are on the right track......
You can put an automotive starter on the engine. I know some frown on this idea, but I have had no problems with mine. They are way cheaper than the marine starters. I coated mine with an anticorrosive sparay just in case, and it does well.
I had the same problem with my boat going 2000 and not planing. I ended up adjusting the timing with the distributor, and changing props.
Yes....they are a hole in the water to put money in, but the accomplishment you feel when you get it right is AWESOME!!!!!
Good Luck!!!"

"Eric, I suggest that if you are going to give advice here you should first check your facts and look at the consequences of your advice. An automotive starter is not spark proof and it can cause a fatal accident if installed on a marine engine: an explosion that can kill people. It is not just that a few of us 'frown on this idea" of installing an automotive starter, it is that it is unsafe and contrary to Coast Guard regulations, period.

Input and advice is always appreciated, but for heave's sake: <u><font color=""ff0000"">please check your facts and think of the consequences of your advice before you post.</font></u>"
