I am curently running 2 165 HP

I am curently running 2 165 HP Mercruisers which I believe are 250 cu.in. GMC and would like to change to 292 cu.in. GMC which Ibelieve are rated at 200 HP. What is the availability and cost?

"Wasn't the Chevy 292 a stoked verson of the 250? Regardless, they were found in GM PU trucks and vans.

Not sure why you would want to do this though. Unless you've got marine cammed 292's sitting there, it will be cost prohibitive. If it is about gaining HP, there are a lot of options. Repowering with 292's wouldn't be my first choice."

As far as I know the 292 block

As far as I know the 292 block is 3 inches higher than the 250 block.

If I went to 2 V 8's I would have to modify the engine mounts and transom. If I use 2 292's I would gain 70 HP without modifying the hull or transom.

I can buy rebuild kits for the 292 for about $900 CAD plus boring and valves. Do you know where I can find 2 292 blocks and do you have an idea how I can find the cost?

The engines are going in a 28 ft. fibreform hull with Merc Alpha drives.

Ayuh,...... Start calling some Junkyards......
"Regardless, they were found in GM PU trucks and vans."

The biggest "Gotcha" I know of is,......
Some of the 250,+ 292 Blocks Don't have the Holes for the Front Marine Motor Mounts.......
Be Sure to look for them......"

"Bone yard motors might cost you $250 to $500 each fully dressed. You run the risk of them being tired too. Most yards will take them back if there is a major problem, but you won't know until you fire it up unless you rebuild. You'll need marine cams for them as well.

If it's about gaining 35 HP, you might find an aftermarket intake and carb and cam setup that would get you there."

"Sometimes you get lucky, I picked one up recently off of ebay, in fact I'm pretty sure it was from the guy named angel orama (the name matches). Just waiting for the weather to warm up to put her in and see what happens. He did tell me about the build, and said it has about 50 hrs run time on it. Its fitted with an electric fuel pump and a rochester quadrajet. So we shall see.

"Here's a shocker, according to mercruiserparts.com, the quadrajet is oem for this engine. I never would've thought that..."
