2003 Honda BF200

Just purchased a used World Cat 266SC with 2003 BF200s on them. Engines have about 400 hours.

The guy I bought the boat from didn't seem to know much. Had it on a lift in the water and had someone maintenance it once in a while.

First off I am not totally mechanically inclined about complicated stuff. Change oil, tires, brake pads, batteries and etc are easy enough and most of these items seems like bolt on and off.

Here's a checklist of items I am going to do:
change thermostat and o-rings
change water impeller
change engine oil and filter
change lower unit oil
check valve clearance
change spark plugs(ngk)
change fuel filter
change high pressure filter
drain vst

How or do I need to check the drive shaft/thrust bearing? I've read that their is a midshaft drive bushing that should be replaced?

Should I get the valves checked?

Do the anodes need to be checked or replaced? I heard that the Honda ones were aluminum so can't really check em?

Anything else I am missing?

1.Anodes are very important, its better to replace ,two small anodes on the gear box one big anode under the trim unit.
2.Mid shaft drive bush mostly get damage after some years of use,so better to check,its easy to see after remove the gear box.
3.drive shaft thrust bearing,i dnt think its really need, but when you remove the gear oil drain bolt (down bolt with magnet tip ) check for any metal debris if it is too much,better to check all the bearings and gears,with all the seals replacement.

# and open throttle body, ISCV and air box, clean them well.
# check timing belt tension.

That's a good list, including the two items added by Wijara. I would add a compression check, if for no other reason than to establish a baseline - all plugs removed, throttle fully opened, and crank for a good 15 - 20 seconds. Use a high quality compression gauge that screws into the plug hole and seals very well.

Every 400 hours I take my engine to a dealer for the 400 hour maintenance schedule. They have yet to need to adjust the valves after 1600 hours. BUT, it's probably a good idea to check them.

Definitely check/replace the three external anodes. They are zinc. The four internal anodes are aluminum and are located in the exhaust manifolds. They probably do not need to be checked at this time unless you see lots of evidence of corrosion in the water passages and around the t-stats. It's a pain to remove the exhaust manifolds and the darn replacement gaskets are pricey.

As you have probably read in many posts on this forum, invest the $116 or so in the Helm Official Shop Manual. Chapter 3 gives very detailed procedures for all of the maintenance items you listed plus a few more.

Just called to check on the three service bulletins affecting my motors and nothing has been done besides replacing one main harness according to Honda. Honda won't pay for it either being out of warranty. Is this true or can I fight for it?

So the three bulletins are:
main relay
thermostat cover
exhaust pipe

Is there a difference in changing out the thermostat and the cover they speak of?

Could the rep I talked to have referred to the main wiring harness as the relay?

Is the exhaust pipe issue serious or can I just pay attention to certain hings during maintenance?

I had issues with main relay and my motors were not under warranty..I got on ebay and paid $30 and put it in myself..in my case the engine would suddenly crank on its own and started smoking. My thermostat housings were all corroded and needed replacing. I am currently replacing exhaust tubes due to blowing O2 sensors.BTW, I am running twin 2003 200s
 
To answer your question directly, yes, the exhaust tubes will likely need to be changed out, UNLESS the engines are mounted very high and the exhaust openings are way above the 5.9" minimum above the water line. I doubt that on a World Cat, especially if you are running in the ocean or large bays where you can get considerable following seas.

Honda sells a complete kit for replacing the exhaust tubes with the new redesigned tubes. Skooter is doing his now, and Jamie (Aristikat) and others have done it themselves. So it you are mechanically inclined, it is something you can do yourself. Take plenty of pictures and make detailed notes during disassembly.
