2003 50hp questions

I'm looking at a non-running 50hp nissan 2003.

I talked to the guy on the phone, he used it recreationally and had it a couple
of years, so he got it second hand. He says the motor started hesitating/sputtering, then
choking out and now it turns over but won't start.

I'm not really a motor guy, so I'm looking for suggestions on what diagnostics I
could perform. I'll check the compression. I think the tldi's provide some
diagnostic feedback somehow (blinking light or readout), was that available on the '03. Can I get the hours on the engine this way?

If he's accurately( and honestly) described the symptoms, it sounds like a fuel issue, either
bad gas or clogged carbs or filter?

Am I correct in reasoning that the motor is not blown, as it will turn over?

Any other ideas?

thanks,
Steve

any idea on cost of parts for the air/fuel injectors?

I got pics of the engine, for 10yrs old it looks used but clean.

We need your actual model/serial to help much. In 2003, a Tohatsu/Nissan 50 hp motor could be either the M50D2 (carbed) or the MD50A (TLDI). If the latter, there aren't any carbs, as it is a DFI motor. If that's the case, it is not a "shade tree mechanic" serviceable design. One would need the FSM to effect expedient diagnostics (yes, the ECM stores a lot of info).

Tohatsu parts are the lowest-cost of any OBs in North America.

If you prefer not to take it to a dealer for evaluation, get a Factory service manual, throw the motor into diagnostic mode, and see what codes come up, then proceed from there.
