2001 evinrude trim failure

the previous owner of my 2001 50 hp 4 strike evinrude said he never used the trim. He also said he had to tap it with a screwdriver to make it work. I have the same problem. I took the motor off and it works great. I put it back on and it worked for a bit nad then went back to the same problem. If it is switched on and you tap on the unit, it will work as long as you keep tapping it. how do
i replace the fluid? Any thoughts on repair? HELP!
 
When I took the motor off, it worked perfectly in both directions. I replaced it and the trim worked for a while and then went back to the same old problem. I want to replace the fluid. If I take the motor off, will I have to do anything but fill to the top of the well or does the unit need to be filled from the red plug higher up on the trim body. Any tips on filling would be appreciated. I plan on checking for problems in the motor...Didn't think about loose wire or brush failure. The original owner didn't use the trim and I thought something was stuck and when the motor worked so well I thought i had the problem solved. I appreciate the help=thanks
 
You have the mtr on the unit, then tilt in full up position. At that time remove the reservoir plug and fill with pt&t fluid or atf.
