1997 Merc 100hp trim problem

The trim on my 1997 merc 100 hp started making a bad knocking sound and will not trim up very high. Could this just be low oil? If so any tips on how to add oil?

Oil is easy to fill, just depends on whether its pressurzied while up or down. On my 115, its under pressure while down, so to add oil, (actually trans. fluid on mine) engine must be all the way up. then slowly and carefully release fill screw, and top off. You should get a manual so you know exactly what you are looking at.

Emac thanks for the help. It would not go up on it's own but we helped it up and verified the oil was fine. We ended up removing the electric motor and found the driver/key broken and likely not repairable.
