"I have a 1992 Force 150 that I bought without a tachometer. When I bought it, it had a deep cycle battery in it. Well, it didn't take long before it blew my rectifier. Wiser, I replaced the battery (and got a newer merc regulator)and ran the whole season fine. This year, I added a tach to my setup, and I couldn't get it to work. I checked my battery voltage, and the battery is getting 20V at idle. Yikes. So, my merc regulator is bad. Nothing looks burnt and the boat runs fine. The yellow stator wires ohm out correctly. I'm at a loss, should I just replace the regulator and hope for the best, or could my stator be the problem?
