Recently baught a boat with a mercruiser 170 in it . Rebuilt the carb (2 barrel)and took it out for a run. Ran great! I decided to open up the engine cover and check for gas leaks and saw the engine was covered with oil! I beleive it was coming out the breather in the valve cover that runs to the air filter. Engine ran great and doesn't smoke. Compression in all 4 cylinders is 180 lbs. What would cause that much oil to come out the breather?

"There are small drain holes under the valve covers in the heads that allow the oil that is in the valve cover to drain back into the oil pan they might be clogged with sludge, old fords used to do that. to check remove the valve cover and check the openings at either end of the engine, clear out with a piece of wire if they are clogged."

I found those holes at either end of the head and stuck a small screw driver in them. They bottom out at about 2 ta 3 inches and stop!

"Did you mean to blow the holes out with compressed air? I took a flashlight and looked in the holes and there not plugged, they just bottom out at about 2 ta 3 inches.
I wonder if they need to be punched out or if the head gasket is blocking them?"
