I have just purchased a 1986 johnson. We put it onto the boat and have hit a snag...The motor appears to be locked up meaning its not lowering. We have tried messing with the levers and gotten nothing actually the dont seem to be bearing any of the weight leading me to think they arent the problem. Any suggestions?

Manual tilt? Power Tilt Trim?

Manual tilt? Power Tilt Trim? Horsepower & model number? Exactly what have you done and what were the results in trying to lower the engine

Manual Tilt. We have so far moved the levers on both sides of the botor and get no response. The levers dont seem like the have weight on them leading so I dont think they are the problem. I will give you the model in the morning when I go back to my garage. Could you guys just give me some general things to try?

"Try hitting the upper pivot pin area with some heat and alternate with some Tri-flow or better penetrant.Do point the torch the other way when spraying, but it will wick into the heated seam and should start to lower.
Also try to loosen the steering tubes nuts on either side as they can be pinching the motor mid-section.If rusty and truly stuck, then you better get some Mapp gas in a plumbing torch and get ready to heat and beat.
The friction washers can get gummy and stick or it is your main tilt rod pin /bushing.
I hit that one one way then reverse direction to get it really moving.
Two ball peen hammers ,one used as a punch will be the weapon of choice if you can`t get it free with the above.
