Motor runs but needs some starting media....
P.O. had broke the recoil starter rope and took the assembly off the motor, procrastinated, then lost the assembly.
Ok, so for grins... I wrapped a rope around the flywheel, pulled... It started... purrs, pees, revs, idles..
I have yet to find a parts manual this old, or parts support... Besides being unsafe, it would also be embarassing to take out in public...without this okie take the cover off to manually wrap a line around the flywheel to start...
So if I knew of the correct part number for a compatable starter I could mount, or someone has a used useable recoil assembly (or starter setup) I could get from them so I can at least take the motor out for use. Eventually I'm going to get around to hopefully a larger motor next year, but even though this is a good running motor in a way, it would be considered a non running motor.
Thanks,
WW

Well unfortunately there isn't a forum that anyone frequents that someone can post an ad wanting parts.. I would hate to just set this engine aside or part out solely because the recoil assembly is not there.. When it's warm I can almost start it by twisting the flywheel by hand.. I could hang a starter on it if I knew the compatable one, get an old Ford solenoid mounted on the boat, etc.. I have done some creative things in the past, but if ever down the road I may happen to want to sell this in order to fund a newer/larger motor, it should be more factory setup.. BUt I will attempt to contact Tohatsu.. Thanks! WW

Hi,
Well I took a chance and bid on a recoil assembly on Ebay from a 1998 Nissan 25hp because at least in the picture, it looked similar..
Came today, looks identical fits perfectly.Works as it should.. I can now use the motor.
There is no written record or reference that this would fit, just seems that Tohatsu has decided to not support anything older than 1992 with parts, or reference to what will or not work... So unless you have first hand knowledge, I guess your on your own. Maybe time to upgrade before I get stuck somewhere...

Glad it worked out for you. As with any 25-year-old motor, YMMV. For intimate knowledge of these older units, one would want to consult either with Tohatsu America, or a dealer who serviced them back then. The parts catalogs do include updated part numbers as they supercede, so if a current part is the correct replacement for an older one, any dealer can cross-reference it. However, if everything is obsolete, you need to find either used parts or old stock that is on a dusty shelf at a dealer. Considering that many salt water OB's are shot after 6 years of service, you are fortunate to find what you need. Here on the Great Lakes, with our colder fresh water, we get a lot more years out of our gear, but we are a small minority of OB owners.

Thanks.. This motor happen to come on a 1985 10 foot Marlin (GW Invader look alike) from the factory set up on a custom galvinized trailer. It was used on inland lakes and has never been near saltwater, and also probably has less than 100 hours on the motor. ( I replaced with a 40hp Merc for a faster run thru my second childhood) Probably should think on just selling the Tohatsu for a more parts support friendly motor as I will be using whatever motor I put on my 15 Reinell in brackish water on the lower Columbia River where the tide effects the river..
