I have a 1985 70 horse Johnson with a VRO. The model number is J70ELCOS. I have been told that the VRO is a potential problem. If it does not work and the warning horn does not sound the engine can be ruined. The horn does seem to be working, but should I consider disconnecting the VRO and mixing the oil in the gas tank manually? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

There's pros and cons on this subject. If it was my motor I'd disconnect it and use premix fuel. JMO

The VRO is said to be " automatic oil injection " --------all well and good.------Trouble is that most owners are not well versed in checking and maintaining the unit.----------So mixing your own is a good / easy way to make sure motor is betting proper lubrication.

Is it difficult to disconnect or should I take it to a mechanic? I have some mechanical ability, I change the water pump myself, but I don't want to take a chance on screwing something up.

The VRO pump is an excellent mixed fuel pump.-------------Cut the oil supply line near the pump and plug it securely.-------Pull the wiring connection on the vro alarm system ( if so equipped ) as the early units did not have a warning module.
