1980 150hp mercury starting problems

"The starter kicks out before the engine is running, I replaced the Bendix unit but it didn't make any difference.

I don't know if this is related, but the motor does not charge the battery, it is a new battery"

"Check all your battery cables

"Check all your battery cables at both ends to be sure they are clean and tight. Any sign of corrosion at the base of the lug, replace it. If you have ever created a spark, hooked the battery up backwards, or disconnected the battery while the motor was running then you have blown your rectifier. Your manual will tell you how to test it."
