Recently had our 1979 OMC 800 on the lake and was going perfectly. Stopped as we usually do for a fish and when we restarted I was unable to get into fwd gear. Reverse was very tight and slipping. Immediately shut down and called for a tow. I have since removed the stern drive but I am unable to remove the hydro assist shift rod and the prop shaft. I know they are meant to come together. After a little persuasion I can now get the shift rod down to engage fwd and up into neutral but I have lost reverse. Is there anyway to either adjust the clutch dog without removing the shift rod and prop shaft or any tricks to removing them. The manual suggests the pull out together but for the life of me I cant get them to budge.
 
Correct.----The shift servo assembly is pulled up while propshaft is pulled out.-----What did the gear oil look like ?-----You have the lower driveshaft pulled OUT ?
 
Gear oil was a little cloudy but mostly looked in good condition. According to the manual I need to remove the prop shaft first. So no it isn’t removed as I also can’t get to the pinion lock nut to remove it.
 
I will try again to remove the pinion and drive shaft and then see if I can then remove the prop shaft. The manual is the OMC 1964-1986 manual off Scribd. Been accurate for the engine overhaul and for removing everything else it’s just this lower gearing that is a problem.
Got any other ideas why the shift rod would be stuck in forward? Can barely get it into neutral when I pull up on the shift rack and then it immediately pulls back down into forward
