Mine is an Australian motor which calls for the centre fire type plug L78V. Ignition timing down under is 34 degrees.

I have to run the usual L77J4 as the ones specified run far too cold.

L78Vs are super when running flat out but at trolling speeds, while running smoothly, leave an oil slick in the water especially at idle.

No problems with starting it at any time but with these plugs, the engine never gets into the thermostat controlling head temps properly.

Change back to L77J4s and no problem with oil slick but WOT RPMs drop by 800 or so and the engine sounds unhappy.

This something different for Australian engine unique?

Regards

As an alternative to the L78V

As an alternative to the L78V you may try QL16V.
A surface gap plug but with better idling characteristics.
