I am having shifting problems. The shifting shaft is very hard to move. The arm that hooks to the shaft has a shoulder bolt that mounts the arm. The bolt has 3 washers and a plastic bushing. Two of the washers are thin and one of them is wavy there is also a thicker washer. There is so much play on the bolt that the pin is coming out of the shifting shaft. Is there something missing? What is the proper alignment of the washers. it sometimes goes into reverse but will not go forward. The gears in the lower unit are good. I believe it has a oil pump that is supposed to make shifting easier could this be the problem?

Look it up on this site to see what parts you might be missing.------Any pictures of your set-up ?----Have never seen issues with those 2 arms.

If you're speaking of the shoulder bolt that has a 3/4" hex head which supports the two shifting levers attached to the front lower portion of the crankcase... there is a wave washer on the bolt itself and a regular washer between the rear lever and the block... that's it.

The bolt is a set length whereas when completely tightened, the levers are at a "no play" setting. Is there a problem with the bolt threads, male or female?

Yes, there is a oil pump in the lower unit. The shift setup is called "Shift Assist".

NOTE: If the small nylon bushing is missing from the top barrel item that screws on top of the shift rod, it will be impossible to adjust the shifting properly. Bushing part #318590.

The top barrel adjustment: Screw the barrel all the way down, then back it up just to the point whereas it is facing properly. That's it.

Thank you for the info. After I got in from the lake with no forward or reverse I decide I was going to look at it and see if I could figure out what was wrong. I attempted several times[to put it back together but every time I had way to much slop in the bolt that screws into the
crankcase. I knew this wasn't right as it would put the shifting mechanism in a bind. I got on the internet and finally found the parts on the crankcase diagram. There was a little problem as I only had one arm going to the shifting shaft and extra pieces that were not suppose to be there. I found the missing arm on ebay and I ordered the other parts from marine engine. I ordered all of the pieces to make sure it is factory original. I hope this solves the shifting issue. I had taken it to two different mechanics and no one caught the missing parts.

Probably a good idea to look for a 3rd mechanic. :)
