1969 85HP Johnson

Good news is I got it to shift perfectly- bad news is it over heats- I got the motor used and rewired ignition - that runs great. Resealed bottom end that shifts great. Overheat light came on again from first time I tried it. Did it again. I checked for water at the crossover tubes at the top side under engine and they are bone dry. I put a new impeller in it and new housing. I am sure that the impeller is engaged into the shaft via the keyway as before I completly seated the water pum housing I twisted the drive shaft and saw the impeller move. My pump has two pick up tubes coming out of the water pump housing and its a REAL F**** PIA to align them when pushing the lower unit back up. I fairly confident that the tubes aligned with the guides to align the pickups. is there any one who has done one of these and know specifically how to do it? This is my second attempt and has been futile. I consider myself fairly competent when it comes to mechanics but this has been plagueing me for a while now. Anyone local in the Salem area?

Simple, there should be 2 plastic tubes that you stick into the pump holes.-----Then you assemble.-------------Bin doing this when these motors were new 40 years ago.-------------It helps if you cut 3/8" off one of the plastic tubes.

Problem is as I push in to asseble the pick up tubes are almost not long inough to engage the plastic tubes. theyre so short that I have to use a screwdriver to align them. further the plastic tubes are kind of beat up do you know were I can get more?

If you are using a factory impeller, in a good housing there is no need to " test it "----------------I have never needed to test a waterpump before sticking the lower unit on a motor.

There should be 2 plastic tubes about 3" / 4" long to make assembly of the lower unit " easy "----These tubes are put into the pump before attempting assemly.
