How far down from the top of the piston is the first ring installed? I'm wondering if some pitting I found in the top of the cylinder is being reached by the rings?

"Pretty common- as long as you have a full ring groove and the side clearence isn't excessive, it has probably been that way since new.

The top ring should leave a distinct spot on the cylinder wall. If not put some heavy oil on the piston and rotate it thru. That will show how close to the top the top ring gets."
