" I've been laid up with a broken hand and I'm just now getting back to working on this boat.

Joe, thanks for your great info on the carb rebuild on this engine. Tonight I tried to install the new water pump and I cannot remove the metal plate that is below the impeller. There is NOT a notch for the shear pin on the drive shaft, rather there is a small pin that is pressed into the shaft. I cannot get the plate past this pin. Also, there is a significant amount of verticle play in the drive shaft. The drive shaft shouldn't move up and down should it? This motor apparently hasn't run in a long time, so I really don't know the status of the lower unit. Everything came apart easily, so my guess is the water pump has been replaced at some point ( the old impeller didn't look too bad). When I turn the shaft it moves freely and turns the prop. I can move the shift lever up and down and it does engage forward and reverse.

Please advise before I go any further. I'm thinking I might need to take this lower unit it to the shop for some major work before I even think about starting the engine.

Thanks guys.

" Kevin..... The driveshaft on

" Kevin..... The driveshaft on that model simply pulls out of the lower unit and will again, simply, slide back into it when you're ready to do so.

Nothing will be displaced within the lower unit with the shaft removed.

With the drive shaft out, remove the old pin and use a new one if one is supplied with the pump.

" Thanks Joe. I was thinking

" Thanks Joe. I was thinking that might be the case, but I wanted to be sure before I re-installed everything only to find I potentially had a bigger problem.

This little motor has been a dream to work on, especially with your helpful advice. "
