135 optimax-2006 intermitant alarm

I have an intermitant alarm that goes off after the engine has ran for a while, could be 1 hr. at higher rpms or after 15mins. after crossing the lake,I slow down and at slow speed the engine will run ruff, like on 5 cylinders instead of 6 and the alarm goes off with a beep-beep-beep alarm. It does not do it all the time.If I shut the engine off and restart, the alarm will go off if I start slow, but if I restart and go full throttle 95% of the time no more alarm. At higher rpm's I could be cruising at 4500 rpms for 45 mins. and then there will be a small drop in power and rpm's and then that intermitant alarm again.Seems if I run at higher rpm's ie.4800-5000 the less likly hood the alarm will go off.If I'm in big waves and riding the throttle back and forth there is also less liklyhood that the alarm will go off at all.I spent 2 weeks on the ocean and with the fishing close I went 4-5 days without the alarm going off at all ,but if I'm travelling longer distances more likly it will go off .I took it to the dealer and these alarms don't show up on the computer, and they couldn't duplicate the symptom.Any sugestions out there???

There are 3 scenario's that will cause a continuous beep combined with a reduction in rpms.

1) no oil flow

2) over speed

3) over heat

It doesn't necessarily mean that you have a mechancial problem, it could simply be a bad sensor (bad temp sensor = perceived overheat).

Unfortunately, because of the complexity of these motors it's near impossible to trobleshoot without them being hooked up to a diagnostic terminal running the appropriate Merc software.

If you take it in to a dealer and have it "plugged in", they will be able to identify the issue in short order and given the cost of the various sensors and components you definately "don't" want to go with the trial/error method based on guesses from guys like us...
