"I have aquired a 1971 80hp merc and I am installing the cap and plug wires. I don't know which wire goes to which plug. Does anyone have a diagram or firing order. For instance, the terminal closest to carbs goes to which plug? And, are the cylinders refererd to as 1-2-3-4 from top of engine down? Thanks"
 
1-2-3-4 from top of engine dow

1-2-3-4 from top of engine down. A 4 cylinder can only be 1-3-4-2 or 1-3-2-4. It is usually written on the cap.

"Thanks Bandit, but this is a used replacement cap that is not marked. Actually I have installed the entire distibutor/trigger assembly and don't know which terminal is the #1,"
