    Cylinder Head

Good call returning it. On those old Evinrude/Johnson powerheads even a small nick can mess with the seal if it's on the gasket face. Clean one will be better for the school build anyway. Cool project for the kids.

google AI response to cobra upper large bearing clearance

Yeah google ai gets that wrong a lot on these cobra uppers. On the 5.0 there’s meant to be some clearance between the large bearing and the pinion so you can get a separator in there later if you need to pull it. Don’t force it all the way against the gear or you’ll have a hell of a time next time.

Two stroke scavenging systems, what are the differences and benefits of either.

Loopers (like the later stuff from OMC and Merc) generally scavenge better by looping the fresh charge around to push out the exhaust more cleanly, which helps with fuel efficiency and power at higher rpms. Crossflows are simpler and tougher in some ways, easier to peek at the pistons too.

Car engine swap in boat D3/D5

It's theoretically possible to take a car long block and convert it for marine use by swapping over the marine-specific components, but there are a few things to consider. Marine engines are built to withstand harsher environments and have key differences, including stronger internal components...

    1978 evinrude 112/115 losing cylinder 4 consistently - 115899c

You might also want to check the cylinder head gasket for any leaks or signs of damage around cylinder 4. A small leak could cause issues at idle but might not be as noticeable at higher RPMs.

    1978 evinrude 112/115 losing cylinder 4 consistently - 115899c

Firstly, even though your compression is good, there might still be an issue with the fuel delivery to cylinder 4. You could double-check the carb rebuild for that cylinder and ensure all passages are clear. Also, consider checking the fuel pump and lines for any blockages or issues that might...

2003 merc 115 hp efi hard to shift into reverse

Oh, that looks like a Halibut, and it's indeed a delicacy! I've had the pleasure of trying it at a local seafood shop, and it was superb. I can see the resemblance with Flounder we have in the Gulf of Mexico; they must be from the same gene pool. Flounder may be smaller, around 1-2 pounds, but...
