    No water from cooling hose.

Nevermind. Took to river yesterday and the pump is putting out a stream.

    No water from cooling hose.

Is there an inspection plate on the block I can remove to search for obstruction? And last question....how much of the cooling water is supposed to discharge from the tell tale and how much through exhaust?

    Lower Unit Ratio Question

My 1977 50 HP should have a 2/1 ratio as suggested by experts on this forum. I bought a used LU that seems to have around 1.75 to one. My question is.....wouldn't a 1.75 turn the propeller shaft faster than a 2 to 1 Ratio? If I'm getting a full prop rev before I turn the drive shaft twice, then...

    Lower Unit Issues

Yep! I had it one spline wrong. Thanks so much for posting this. It will go into the Merc file! The crazy thing is, I have owned the engine for ten years and replaced water pump impeller at least twice before. I must have gotten really lucky with the installs. Either that, or I never removed...

    Lower Unit Issues

Looks like I have a wrong lower unit. I'm getting about 1.75 turns for every prop turn. Thanks for the learning lessen. Now to figure out what to do.

    Lower Unit Issues

The driveshaft goes around approx 1.75 for 1 revolution of prop. Sounds like I have the wrong lower unit.

    Lower Unit Issues

Yikes! Never knew there could be different ratios. I bought it used, obviously, so I didn't know it could be different. I'm re-install and see what happens. Is the ratio printed in some type of model number anywhere on the LU? thanks!

50 HP Lower Unit Drive Shaft

I ended up buying a lower unit that had the correct shaft length. Thanks for your help. My issue now is correctly installing the lower unit. I have started another thread if you have a chance to view. thanks

My issue is probably how I have installed my cam reverse lock on the shift shaft. Any help is certainly appreciated.

    Lower Unit Issues

1977 50 Hp Merc 500 Original lower unit destroyer on rock. Replacement is having issues shifting and running. Engine starts and idles fine but when shifting into forward, engine dies repeatedly. After several attempts I can slowly nurse RPM's up until it stopes at about 3/4 throttle. Not enough...

50 HP Lower Unit Drive Shaft

I removed pinion gear bolt, but the water pump base is preventing me from lifting the drive shaft out. I thought this was something I could handle but I may take it to a local mechanic that works on old Mercs. He warned me that swapping shafts may require shimming to achieve proper fit. thanks

50 HP Lower Unit Drive Shaft

I have a 1977 500 with a busted lower unit housing. I bought a replacement on ebay that has a drive shaft that is 3" shorter than the one I have. Looks like my choice is to swap drive shafts. My question is how do you remove the water pump base? There is nothing to grab and it is preventing me...

    Mercury 70H.P. Internal Harness (P/N: 84-73204)

Recieved new harness and installed. The original switch requires wires to be soldered. Pain in the bottom but got it finished and everything works as it should.

1978 Merc 500 Turning over too slow to start.

While digging into cable connections, it was obvious wires were in sorry condition all the way to the engine plug. I ordered a new harness and will do a complete rewire and then see if problem solved, or mess with starter. thanks for the advice!

    Mercury 70H.P. Internal Harness (P/N: 84-73204)

My original harness for my 1977 500 is a part 45876. That part changed a couple of times and is now a 474-9550. I just purchased one on line. Never thought about making my own until reading racerone's post. Too bad. Probably could have saved some money.

1978 Merc 500 Turning over too slow to start.

My Merc will spin what seems to me fast enough to start, but it won't. When I hook a battery charger to the battery, the engine spins fast and starts. After running a while, the engine starts easily throughout the day. The Marine Starting Battery is almost new and checks out with a load tester...
