Good Day! Trying to id outboard with no tag, but freeze plug numbers are...

Yep, it's a 1982. The parts list is located here--> 1982 J115 Parts Take Racer's advice and check compression first. Fogging oil is your friend here and I suggest spraying all 4 cylinders with fogging oil through the spark plug holes and through the carb throats before spinning this engine...

    Water pressure gauge connection

Yes, I believe that plug should work. The fitting above it is your telltale outlet.

    Water pressure gauge connection

Look on the Cylinder & Crankcase Parts Diagram. I believe the plug listed as #17 can have an 1/8" NPT (Or maybe 1/4" NPT) to 3/16" hose barb adapter threaded in to give you water pressure. There may also be a fitting on the head by the top cylinder for the same purpose.

    No Tach Signal - 1996 Evinrude 150 V6

I believe your voltage would be out of whack if the rectifier were bad. Did you have a tach before that didn't work, or is this a brand new install? If you got a generic tach, make sure the DIP switch on the back is set to 6P for your Evinrude.

high rpms in neural after carb clean

Running wide open at idle is usually a lean condition, so you may have a leak somewhere. Did you spray anything around the manifold gaskets to check for a "solid seal"? You could hose them down with fogging oil and if the RPM momentarily drops that will tell you a gasket is bad or the carb...

Evinrude DI 115 hot warning and limp mode

Do you have a water pressure gauge to see if you are getting good pressure to the block? Connecting to EVDiag software will be a good thing because it will show you temp history and exactly how hot it got. I don't recall if the ECM is water cooled, but if it is, you may have a restriction in...

    Oil leaking from prop

Engine model # and pictures will help a lot. When you say crack it could mean different locations on the lower unit. The picture of the location and the oil will help tell the story. Having the model number will help to know what vintage and type of lower unit you are talking about.

70hp Johnson replacement recommendations on 16' boat needed

If USCG ratings are any concern, then you probably need to stick with a 70HP. Since the other 16' boats are rated for 90HP you might be okay, but that's a decision for you to make. I have no knowledge of those boats and whether there are any design differences between the different models that...

70hp Johnson replacement recommendations on 16' boat needed

Do you know the exact model #, maybe from the Title? Here are specs I found for 1990 16' Sunbird Boats on JD Power. If you have an SPL160 its rated for a 70HP. The SPL 160 F/S, 170, 171, & 174 are all rated for a 90HP. The 1997 FS115 is a good Looper V4. Cylinder compression should be about...

    Water pump replacement not working.

To self prime, the pump needs to be submerged. That is why you'll see recommendations to have 3" to 4" of water above the anti-ventilation plate when running an outboard in a tank. If you just had the intake screens submerged when doing your drill test, it's possible the pump couldn't prime...

Revving up and speeding up when hitting waves

Please describe your carb cleaning procedure and post a model #. This sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Either a carb float is sticking and the bounce of the boat jostles it loose and allows fuel to flow, or you have a restriction somewhere that momentarily chances when the boat bounces. It...

    solid fiberglass transom

Back to the original post, I have rebuilt a transom using Seacast Pourable Transom Material and it worked fantastic. I'm not sure how much it costs these days, but if I were to rebuild another transom I would use this material again. Pour it once and never worry about transom rot again. On my...

    Engine Drain Ports - Clogged!

I have a 5.0L Alpha 1 Gen II. I always run my boat up to temp on a hose to get the thermostat open, then I remove my 5 blue blue plugs to drain the block, risers, and water pump. I also have a 6 gallon jug I've rigged up with a male hose fitting. After the block drains I reinstall the blue...

    Mercruiser 4.5 Winterzing.

Yes, but it's a pain. My boat has a hose connected to the oil plan drain hole and it was originally tethered to the drain hull plug. The idea was to run the engine to warm the oil the snake the hose through the hull drain, remove the plug on the end of the hose, and let the oil gravity drain...

    1986 Evinrude 70hp - been sitting for 30 years

That's a shame, but yes, if there was no gear oil the lower unit internals need a visual inspection before doing anything. I used to know some folks that thought the best way to store an outboard was to drain the gear oil for the winter, then fill it up in the spring before using the boat...

    Hard to start

As Racer said, clean the carburetors. You likely have varnish gumming up a passage or needle valve that is preventing correct fuel flow. A correctly cleaned, rebuilt, and adjusted carburetor will make the engine run exactly right assuming spark and compression are both good. Also, after...

    Evenrude 175 HP 2 stroke

Yes, just a dab. The BB on the side of the chamber is from drilling after the plastic bowls are cast. Over time the plastic shrinks and the BB loosens a bit allowing seepage/leaks. A dab of epoxy seals in the BB and prevents this from happening in the future.

    Evenrude 175 HP 2 stroke

That's a lot of priming. Either the check valve in your primer bulb is bad or you have a leak somewhere. The ball should get firm. There is an arrow on the primer ball that should point toward the engine. The carbs should not be "leaky". If you have fuel weeping out anywhere on the carbs...

    Tilt and trim help!

This may be an odd coincidence, but it's possible you have bad o-rings on your manual bypass valve. They are #9 and #10 on the tilt/trim parts diagram.
