    Did not say if this was on a hose or in the water...
    Heat exchanger usually have an automotive style "radiator cap" for antifreeze check.
    What temp rating t'stat is in the engine?

    Oil cooler has 40 to 60 pse oil pressure on oil side and just a few psi (or even a slight vacuum) on the water side. Compression check should give you more info.... and yes, you need the oil cooler.

    Head rebuild or replace and gasket should do it... however... many feel that 1000 hrs on a sea water cooled engine is about it. Have seen engines where a couple of square inches of block wall...

    Further jeffnick's post.... The "neck", that fitting on the drive that the raw water hose attaches to is a wear item. It is prone to pinhole corrosion leading to vacuum leaks on the raw water...
