1973 Johnson 50hp melted plastic running from under the flywheel.

Good evening, all,
I was changing the spark plugs and noticed what appears to be dried melted plastic that has ran down from under the flywheel. The motor runs good and the only thing that has changed recently is it has started to over charge the battery. I installed a cutoff switch to disconnect it after I start it. I looked at the ignition break down and I'm guessing the stator is possibly over heating? Why would it?
Hopefully someone has knowledge concerning this because I hate to start throwing expensive parts at her.

All of the stators leaked like that across most of the HP 3 cylinder and V4 models in 1973-1976, very common. Other than the fact it made a mess, you can use them until they don't work. Later models had a different potting material and design where the charge coils and windings were concealed. If it runs good run it...What do you mean when you said that it is overcharging the battery, what voltage are you reading at rest and while running? You may of a loose connection or a bad battery.

After starting at idle the voltage will climb from 12.5 to 14.5-15.5 volts at speed it has reached 17.5. I've tested the battery with a handheld analyzer and my old school load tester and it passes. I have checked all of the connections on the motor and battery. How this all started during an outing I became aware of the over voltage when my tach, temp and hour meter began to smoke. I installed a voltmeter after that to see what's going on. The local boat dealer told me to replace the rectifier, but it didn't chance the voltage issue. I haven't found anyone trustworthy in my area that will tackle it, the dealers won't touch anything this old. I installed a battery cut off switch on the dash so after she's started, I flip the switch, so I won't burn up anymore gages.
