I put 90 gallons of fresh gas into my boat (Penta 5.0) last weekend and put about 50 miles through it without any problems over the entire weekend. When I was a couple miles from the marina on my way back, I was doing some drift fishing before putting the boat away for the week. Anyways, as I was drifting with the engine in neutral at low-idle, the engine started to cough and sputter and eventually lost power. After about 5 or 6 attempts to crank it back over, it seemingly coughed everything clear and I was able to gain power and throttle back. When it was coughing, I had no control over throttle or anything. Given that I didn't have any problems over 2 days and 50 miles, and just the one hiccup at the end, I am thinking maybe it was just something in the fuel or maybe pressure/air in the fuel line causing a small interrupt.
The fuel pump assembly is brand new, spark plugs have been recently changed, all new filters and water/fuel separator, new fuel regulator a couple months ago etc.
Ran the boat at idle in neutral for a few minutes at the dock while flushing the engine and didn't have any problems.
My question, does this just sound like some small contamination that passed through, or does it sound like something else? Anyone have anecdotal experience with this? Do I need to check my water/fuel seperator, and if I do does it need to be replaced or can it be reinstalled?
Thanks!
