Serial # is 5353938. Compression is 130 on all 3. I just bought this motor for very cheap. I replaced the rectifier and stator to establish spark. I rebuilt the fuel pump to get it running. But I saw a little bit of water trickling out of the top spark plug threads while running. What exactly is that likely to mean on this particular engine?

Likely the water jacket gasket is leaking.---=--Easy fix on a fresh water motor.-----I doubt that water can find it's way out of sparkplug threads !

Oh thanks. That's good news. I just pulled the plugs and cranked the motor over and no water came out. And there was no white smoke while it was running. However I swear that I tightened that plug a little more and the dripping stopped. But I could be imagining it.

I agree. You mistake the source of the water. If water "was" actually running out of the spark plug threadsThe spark plug would be loose and the cylinder would contain water. Water in the cylinder can be caused by holes in the block casting caused by corrosion...usage in salt water without proper flushing after use. The other thing you see is the interior of the cylinder...spark plug and piston top, are clean as compared to the other cylinders......BTDT

Also BTDT on replacing water jacket outer cover (with the holes for the spark plugs) on my Mercs including my I-6 115.
