This is the answer. Everything else is sub par. I spent all day trying to get it back together. I own the service manual. None of the literature or YouTube videos cover this.It's a 3 cyl. VRO model.
Shift rod must be offset to port side. If it isn't you can turn the shift rod under the cowling with nose pliers. If the rod has been rotated a full turn or more its hight is misadjusted. Gear should be in neutral.
Now push the shift lever on starboard all way in and rotate the lever a little back or forth, then release it. You should find the connection position soon. It may help to disconnect the horizontal shift link on the starboard side.
