I just replaced the water pump impeller and having great difficulty re-connecting linkage at the top. any suggestions? thanks ! David

It's a 3 cyl. VRO model.
Shift rod must be offset to port side. If it isn't you can turn the shift rod under the cowling with nose pliers. If the rod has been rotated a full turn or more its hight is misadjusted. Gear should be in neutral.
Now push the shift lever on starboard all way in and rotate the lever a little back or forth, then release it. You should find the connection position soon. It may help to disconnect the horizontal shift link on the starboard side.

This is the answer. Everything else is sub par. I spent all day trying to get it back together. I own the service manual. None of the literature or YouTube videos cover this.

Don’t mess with the rotation of the gear selector shaft - or if you do - note explicitly how many turns were made.

Needle nose pliers and the access points below the cowl and above the lower unit are your friends.
