Hello, sorry if this is a dumb question. Don’t have much experience with boats and this era of OMC seems especially confusing.
My uncle and I have an ‘88 Donzi with the Ford 7.5L 460, with the OMC baby king cobra outdrive. Dog clutch. The upper gear housing is shot, and we were trying to find a replacement to bolt on. To my understanding, the gear ratio for it is 21:17. And I am seeing that is the same ratio for the 5.0 (305 Chevy) and 5.8 (351 Ford) for this era with the dog clutch. My question is, does the replacement have to come off of the big block 7.5? Or will the uppers off the small blocks with the same gear ratio work?
I know the lower units were smaller and different, but I don’t know if the uppers from the small blocks will hold up or if the internals are too weak for the 7.5.
If anyone who knows more about these damn OMCs is able to help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
