Carburetor nuts. 1999 Johnson 50 hp

How crucial is it to use oem nuts on the carbs? I had a few that the washer that's built in were broke so I swapped them with hardware store stock and now have a small air leak on one carb. Thanks.

Not crucial at all.----Find the real cause of the leak.-----What is your motor doing / not doing?

I rebuilt the carbs and can't get it to idle. Sprayed carb cleaner around and the idle changed when I hit around the nut on the bottom carb. The gaskets are new. I didn't put any gasket sealant on. Should I have. I thought I saw it didn't matter.

I doubt you have an air leak.

Did you tighten the nuts evenly?

I believe I did. I'm pretty meticulous about this kinda stuff. Like I said, I was spraying carb cleaner and got a definite tone change on the bottom carb. I'll recheck in the morning. Thank you.

OEM nuts are $$. Go to your local hardware store & buy SS in the same size/thread pitch.
