2005 v/p dp sm drive bangs into gear and hard to return to neutral

i have this boat with the issue above. the shift cable was definitely worn out and i replaced it. originally i had the nut adjusted all the way in to the end of the threads, now it is at mid travel and shifting is definitely better than it was before but still banging into gear like i was going from high rpms into gear but the engine is at idle speed. i reset the IAC motor and it is now idling about 600-625 yet the shifting is just hard. reverse is better but not as fluid as other v/p i encounter.
i have inspected the shift selector on the drive. the grooves are nice and deep and nothing seems worn. the spring is fine as well.
the shifting from drive the neutral is like trying to shift a mercruiser into neutral with the shunt switch disconnected. you can do it but its a struggle.
i dont want to spend money unnecessarily but if anyone has had this issue and found that the shift control assy was the issue, please chime in
thanks guys

Since that is a "Joint Venture" drive, I took these 2 pictures from a 1995 OMC service manual. Only difference I see between single & dual prop is quantity.
Buy the correct oil.
