I rebuilt my grandfather's JW-14 motor and ran it with 16:1 mixture with tc-w3 oil. Smokes a little but not horrible especially under full power.

I have supplied pictures of the spark plugs. They are on the dark side with oil on the compression ring.

Im thinking about going to 24:1 with the modern oil. I've heard of some people running 50:1.

I've gotten a lot of good advice here before so I thought I'd pose the question.

I have run Amsoil Saber, since 2004, at 40:1 in all bushing motors. In 1964 we notice needle bearings in most critical locations, except motors under 5.5 horsepower. I go with 64:1 Saber oil on these....non oxy fuel only. I've never damaged a motor in any way. But perhaps I've only been very lucky. Rebuilt my first Johnson in 1966, a 1952 2 1/2. Oils were poor back then, but at least dedicated 2 stroke oils had been formulated. I mixed 24:1 on the bushing motors and 40:1 1965 and later. Been at this over 60 years now.

Right on both comments above. That tiny twin fires 2 times with each revolution. No wonder so smooth. 4 stroke single fires once in two revolutions. Huh?
