2007 F225TRXD Dies Intermittently in Gear at Idle

I have a, what is believed to be, 2007 Yamaha F225TRXD with 1539 hours on it. Motor runs amazing, compression is 150-170psi across all cylinders. I’ve been running into an issue intermittently where it will die while going through a no wake zone in gear at idle speed. It does not bog or act up at any other RPM nor will it die at idle in neutral. I ran it last night on land for 45 minutes while monitoring live data through YDS, all sensors are reading correctly. I did find 3 codes, codes 23 occurred at 1531hrs , 28 occurred at 1534hrs and 29 occurred at 1539hrs. I cleared them and they haven’t returned. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don’t want to take the boat back out on the ICW until I have this resolved. Thank you in advance!

Code 28 is the one I'd chase first - I think that's the shift position switch signal, the ECM might not be adding enough fuel or adjusting timing to compensate for the prop drag.Worth checking continuity across the switch and verifying it cleanly opens and closes as you shift through the positions. I've seen a THT thread on an F225 with the same code combo (23, 28, 29) and similar low-RPM stalling where the shift switch tested bad. If that wasn't you, might be worth a shot and see what the activity on that thread is.

Might be worth pulling the airbox and checking that both sensor connections are clean and tight for Codes 23 and 29

One other thought at 1,539 hours on EFI. Your injectors at that hour count are a suspect. A flow test & or cleaning would show any imbalance between cylinders pretty quickly and either rule it out or give you another piece of the puzzle. I am co-owner and operator of Dialed Injectors, a professional Fuel Injector Cleaning and Servicing business. You should have Hitachi CDH240s Top Feeds, a common service item for us. Happy to help if you are interested in going in that route. Give you better gas mileage at the very least.

Cheers! Good luck, 93Craft.

Thank you for the reply. I did forget to mention that it won’t start up for several minutes after it dies. It’ll start running rough and die within seconds, then it’ll crank no-start for a few minutes and then eventually start up and run fine again. Do you happen to have a link to that thread?
