2007 Mercury Bigfoot 50 HP 1C047875 - Not sure what to do here, hoping someone has see this. I removed lower unit to change out impeller, after putting back on, can no longer move the shifter into Reverse position, does not go any lower than Neutral position. Took lower unit back off, marked the top shift shaft(bottom of upper unit where shift shaft locks in to lower unit), this showed me where it moves to when i move the shifter. Neutral, Forward(clockwise), Reverse(counter-clockwise) looking from underneath engine. Left the shifter in Reverse. Then on the lower unit, i used a 11/32 wrench to turn the shift shaft into Reverse(which is actually clockwise when looking down on lower unit). I know this is Reverse, because when i spin the drive shaft clockwise, prop goes reverse direction. So i think the orientation is correct, although i saw a video on this shift shaft on lower unit that stated clockwise was Forward.?? Anyway, i tried all the way clockwise and all the way counter-clockwise, while leaving the shifter in Reverse. Both times it allows me to move shifter up to Neutral, but then cannot go back down to Reverse. The other concern i have is when the shifter moves, the top shift shaft only moves slightly, mayby 30 dgrees between reverse and forward. When i turn the shift shaft on the lower unit, it moves about 120 degrees to go from Reverse to Foward. Not sure why. Could i have broken something inside the shift shaft assembly on the lower unit? Or does this just need an adjustment in the gear shift cable in the engine that moves that top shift shaft? Anyone have experience with this situation?
