1992 20 HP Evinrude

I want to replace the impeller . I pulled the lower unit off,but the lower metal plate of the water pump wont drop off. The nut to disconnect the shifting linkage wont let it. Any help would be great . Thanks in advance !

I guess you have missed something.
Remove the water intake and 'split' the shift linkage.
Then push the nut on the upper rod 'UP', remove the small plastic keeper on the rod, push the nut down again and the upper rod will slide out of the nut.
Usually recommended to change the plastic keeper at re-install, but if careful it may be re-used.

How do you split it ? It is just one nut ? Thanks

It is one nut on top screwed onto the lower rod.
Look closer.
You need 2 1/2" box wrenches to split them.
Be careful not to change the height adjustment of the lower rod, or the shift linkage will be out of adjustment.

The lower shift rod should be fully screwed into the lower unit.
