Lower unit issues

3.0 140. We dropped the lower unit to replace the impeller and had to spin the shaft a good bit to get the new impeller installed correctly. Once we got it back together we realized the lower unit wasn’t in the same gear as the shifter. What should we do to get everything back in line, dropping the lower this evening to try again

If a regular alpha 1 drive , place the control box in full fwd, turn the splined shaft in the lower unit fully clockwise with the prop locked CCW. Install the unit making sure the splines enter the upper brass shoe without binding and the shoe remains in a straight line bin its upper section.
DO NOT FORCE IT ON WITH THE NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

with the lower unit removed, the splined shaft is turned fully clockwise until the prop is locked CCW. This is fwd gear.

Yea I understand but I’m saying it won’t turn clock wise. When I spin the prop ccw the big shaft turns and when I spin it clock wise the big shaft doesn’t move, does this mean the lower unit is in FWD gear?

Split the lower from the upper,

Turn splined shift shaft fully clockwise while slowly spinning prop CCW.. It should lock/stop.

now reinstall lower to upper and VERY carefully line up bronze shift arm and it must be pointing straight froward (12:00) and also lines up with the splines on the shift shaft all while keeping pressure on the prop in the CCW direction. Once you get all this lined up then continue to install lower to upper and if you have to line up vertical drive shaft splines, TURN PROP CCW until splines line up.

If this does not work you have another issue

We have the lower dropped. We tried to turn the shift shaft clock wise but it will not move, the prop spins ccw still but with resistance. Prop free spins clock wise with click noise.

So basically we can’t move the shift shaft and we can’t get the prop to “lock” ccw it turns fairly easily ccw.

The shift shaft only turns a tiny bit, like 1/8th of a turn. Use a pair of pliers and turn the shift shaft clockwise (again, it only turns a tiny bit) while turning the prop CCW. The prop should lock into place.

use a socket ,much easier. Now if the shaft is still hard to turn in either direction then if you used the nuts to draw the unit together you damaged the shift selector

but I’m saying it won’t turn clock wise. When I spin the prop ccw the big shaft turns and when I spin it clock wise the big shaft doesn’t move, does this mean the lower unit is in

spinning the prop CCW and the driveshaft turns means your locked in fwd gear but with the impeller pump instaled it should be difficult to turn . If you installed the pump dry and forced the prop CCW you may have reversed the vanes .
By turning it CW your releasing the dog clutch and going into neutral.
Rotating the shift shaft CCW and turning the prop CW will spin the shaft in reverse
