Edelbrock 1409/1410 Carb - What is this port?

Hello,

Please pardon my ignorance. What is this port on a Edelbrock 1409/1410 carb? I had initially assumed it was for vacuum advance, but after reading the Edelbrock manual, the vacuum ports are on the front of the carbs - and are not on the Marine 1409/1410 versions. In addition, I can't find any information on what this port is for. Is there not an option for vacuum advance? Should this be capped off?

Thanks much in advance!
Scott

That's where you connect the fuel pump overflow line

Ah, OK. What if I don't have an overfill return line? Can I just put a hose cap and clamp on it?

Also, is it possible to drill out the body (in it's provisioned location) to add a vacuum advance line for the distributor?

Thanks!

If you don't have an overflow spill line from your fuel pump then you have a non marine pump. Ack.
There shouldn't be any vacuum advance on a marine engine distributor. If there is one, then it's a car distributor with a completely wrong advance curve, not to mention the obvious safety concerns since it isn't equipped with spark suppression. Suggest you find the correct dizzy. Marine dizzy for Ford and Chevy small blocks are on ebay all the time for cheap.

I do have a marine version, Holley fuel pump. I don't recall seeing the vent tube on it and didn't remember seeing anything about it in the instructions, but I need to double check that pronto. A quick re-read of the instructions online indicate that the marine pumps do indeed have the fume tube hook-up. I will route that right away. Thanks for the info!

I will start looking for a marine distributor as well. Are there any you recommend (I have SBC)? I'd prefer to go electronic, as opposed to points/cap/rotor.

Learning as I go... I really appreciate your input and wisdom. It's scary to think what could have happened!

Best Regards,
Scott

I went big cheap last time and bought a BNIB Mercruiser GM 350 points distributor for a whopping $45. Nobody else even bid on it, so I got it for the opening bid cost. So I had a brand spankin marine dizzy that I promptly switched over to Pertronix for another $100 or so (also from FleaBay) Now I was into the whole thing for less than 150 and it was all new everything. Spiff, yes?
Long story short that engine blew up right from the start. Overwhelming upwelling of GM hate caused me to pull out the Chevy and go all Ford. I donated the salvagable parts, including that luvly dizzer, to the local VFD auction so they could raise money to save my house if it ever catches fire. So in paying forward some Karma I have denied other boaters of valuable low hour parts scabbing. You too will have to go to the well and see what you can come up with.
Wanna get one super cheap? Look for a distributor that's reverse rotation, buy or scrounge a regular drive gear and switch it over. NO body wants a used or even a new reverse rotation distributor cz they're too dumb or lazy to swap the drive gear.
Now all that said, don't knock points. They work. When they don't work you can look at em and see why they don't work and fix it. Plus an extra set and a condensor in your on board spares is pretty cheap. You like cheap, I can tell.

Well I followed the link you put in your note and I can see the vent tube on that picture clear as day, so go to the Auto Zone or whatever and get some 1/8 tube and connect it to the carb. Badda bing.

What are the draw backs of not having a Marine fuel pump? My old carb didn't have that port and obliviously the 1409 does. What are the options? The Engines are 73 318's. Thanks

Following. Also just purchased the 1409’s for my old 327’s. I just installed electronic Delco EST’s and was going to put these on this week. I still have the old mechanical pumps and don’t recall seeing a vent tube to hook up to the 1409’s

Ayuh,..... Yer followin' a long dead 11 year old thread,.....

If you don't have a nipple for the fuel pump overflow tube, put one in the flame arrester, so it can dump down the throat of the carb,.....

If your fuel pumps are original (and OLD) its very possible they don't have the double diaphragm design which means no fitting for the sight tube.

Just a question. If by chance someone might know the answer. I have 1994 Crusader 454's with Holley 84050 carbs and an MSTS ignition advance. This connects to an EST distributor. I want to change the carbs because they are giving me problems but the MSTS system requires a vacuum port to operate the MAP sensor. It appears that I may not be able to switch to an Edelbrock 1409.

There should be a pipe plug in the manifold you an pull and put a nipple in ...that would be easier than drilling the carb...

after getting back to my library, the 1409 should have a couple manifold vacuum taps on it...just make sure you use the full manifold tap to feed the map sensor...
