Removal of power head

Sorry never did a forum before, excuse my inexperience. I received an old johnson outboard motor, the transom tag says model 4R69B and serial E3149265 and the stamp on the motor has the same E3149265 is it a 1969 or 1965 (4 HP) and do these two years have that much difference for servicing.

Downloaded johnson service manual and started disassembly to discover the motor is completely seized. I removed fuel system, ignition system etc. but can not get the power head to move from lower motor cover. I have been trying everything known to man to separate the lower motor cover from the power head nor can I get the lower gear case apart far enough to find any pins or clamps holding the drive shaft to separate for removal.

Needless to say I have read a ton and watched many videos (none on this exact year). One that was helpful stated to put motor in forward to get the drive shaft linkage to drop down, this little motor has no forward and reverse unless that is another thing that's missing.

How is this drive shaft connected to the power head. Where would the connection be under the lower motor cover where the water connection is, or further down the shaft at the lower gear case.

I appreciate your experience and knowledge thanx in advance.

It sounds to me that no maintenance was done.-----The lower unit must be removed to inspect / replace impeller.----At that time about 10 cents worth of grease must be applied to driveshaft splines.-----My guess from 1020 miles away is that water got on the splines and the crankshaft splines rusted.----Jammed the driveshaft SOLID.----If you have the 4 bolts out on your 1969 motor the lower unit should slide off easily.----Your location ?

Welcome. Looks like a 69. Agreed, splines rusted. Probably not worth it. If cylinders are rusted up too....yuck! Save for parts and look for a better one. There's lots out there. These are wonderful little motors. Run like a sewing machine and only "sips" gas.
