What's special about a 2009 5.0 MPI block?

1st post!
Looking at a boat with a frozen engine, as in frozen water jacket; it needs a block. Having a real hard time finding one for 2009-ish. It's a total deal breaker if the blocks are hard to get i.e. spendy.

I'm also looking at a 5.7 upgrade but that seems even more complicated. The 5.0 at 260HP is fine for this application.

If I buy, it will have to be before the weekend, so time is short (price seems right).

I've repowered 4 other boats, 3 for the same reason, all carbureted, and straight forward. This one has me concerned....

Thanks for any insight, it is appreciated.

Ayuh,...... Just buy a 350 long block, swap the accessories over from the original motor, 'n go boating,.....

Block, for block, a truck motor, 'n boat motor are nearly identical,....

What is special they stopped making the 5.0 , so you gotta get a rebuild or move up to a 5.7 which if you have MPI requires a ECM relfash. I bought a new 5.0 base engine in the end of 2015 they stopped making them shortly thereafter and prices went up $1k over what I paid.

You can use a 5.0 reman or truck engine out of a wrecking yard- only thing you need vs a carded engine is the crank position sensor on the timing cover- most have them. My carbed one does and it sits unused.

A place like michigan motorz would likely have a reman but maybe not or you may need to supply a core.

If you like the boat and can invest the money I would go 5.7 and get the ECU reflashed. You may need a merc dealer to do this.

From what I've learned, the 5.0 is not available. I did find a complete used engine for $10k; no.

A 5.7 option requires the right 5.7. Something about the cam position sensor mounting is required and probably more. Insight on this would be appreciated. And there's the reflash. I've not talked to anyone but those services are available.

I've also read that the outdrive ratio goes from a 1.47(?) to a 1.5:1 for the 5.7. Not sure how critical that is or if it's correct. I'd rather not change props.

If you want to keep it simple here is a reman 5.0 from a reputable supplier https://www.michiganmotorz.com/5-0l-vortec-marine-engine-1996-current

its not a cam position sensor it is the crank position sensor on front timing cover all mpis use them.

drive ratio u if you were previously propped correctly you can re prop to keep the same ratio. Likely your 5.0 came with a 1.62 drive, a 5.7 will come with a 1.47 or 1.50 ratio ( no working diff between them) . I repowered a 4.3 to a 5.0 and kept my 4.3 ratio 1.81 drive, just went up in pitch from 19” to 21” prop.

Again best bet if u want to keep it long term is by a 5.7 and reflash the drive , yes more complicated but if you like the boat best ( not cheapest) path forward. If you want to keep it simple, get the reman 5.0 and go boating…you may need an i take and likely exhaust manifolds. Also make sure your winterization procedures are correct so you dont deal with this again

Well here's the followup.

Boat was a basket case. It was full of water, as in up to the floor and valve covers. Everything below there was under water. Probably well over 1,000 lbs in it.

It was a pretty hard no just walking up to it, but once inside; no. Been sitting outside uncovered for who knows how long. Registration sticker was 2018, which doesn't jive with seller's story. It goes on and on. It's a shame really.
Thanks for the advice.

Ha ha ha ha I know, some people are selling actual straight up garbage for stupid money these days. I mean how hard is it to pull the drain plug out?
